Carmen The Chicken Killer, and other tales
These are a few illustrations from a book I am writing of stories I was told when I spent two months in Costa Rica with William's family. I had been planning on attending a Spanish immersion program in Mexico; William told me if I was going to immerse myself in Spanish I should do it in his family as none of them speak any English and it would be a good opportunity for me to really get to know them. I warned him that when I returned I would know more about him and his family than he does...a statement that has proven to be quite true. I was told many tales of love and passion, family and friends. Escribe! Escribe! (Write! Write!) was the command from everyone as we all struggled to make me understand and chronicle their histories. I hope to have a draft of these stories by early next year...each accompanied by my sketches and a generous sprinkling of recipes which I also tried to write down amidst a flurry of hands chopping and peeling and stirring.
